INTERVIEW by MOLLY SIMMONS

From Hong Kong to New York to Lisbon, Molly Simmons of Petit Mort goes on a voyage with author, poet, and stripper Emily Marie Passos Duffy. She takes us through the story of her book, and her connection to family, body, place, and power in this moving interview.

I absolutely loved your book of poetry. I would love to know more about your personal story and the conception behind this book.

I'm the first generation born in the U.S. on my mom’s side and second generation on my dad’s side, so immigration, language, and assimilation have been very present themes throughout my life. My mother is Brazilian, and my father is Irish. I grew up in New England, and I've lived in four different countries. I started working in this industry through Craigslist (when that was still a thing). I've tried out content creation, and I've been a stripper for over six years.

This book engages with my heritage to try and better understand what I carry forward in this body and in this lifetime. I really wanted to explore what happens when cities are main characters, just as important as families or lovers in shaping us.
