We've all seen the memes; we all know the stories. Men wary of women just using them for their money, women with attachment issues looking for their sugar daddy, dating apps that don't seem to bring people anything other than disappointing one-night stands- it feels like we're in the trenches when it comes to relationships. Most people don't seem to be having them, or they're stuck in an endless loop of the first date. Evangelism and hardcore conservatism are on the rise among young people in the United States, and it feels like everyone over thirty wants to be polyamorous, but nobody wants to do the work. What on earth is going on in the modern dating era?
It's irrefutable that we're living in a time of great change in our society. The world around us shifts from minute to minute, and the uncertainty of the future hands mover our heads like a pall. People are jaded and tired: overworked, underpaid, and despite the personal growth and access to mental and emotional health resources we've seen since our parents' time, we're still struggling to form healthy and lasting connections. Is it because the dating world has changed, or is it because we're living in a fantasy land?
