I’m really interested in how you piece together the puzzle of your life. Everyone's doing that in New York, right? It’s like a massive puzzle, and you have to create it yourself through your decisions and intentions.

Do you mind if I smoke?
Take your time.
Not that I have to, but I’m planning to quit soon—drinking and smoking.
You're going to cut that out for a little while?
I don’t want to become one of those people who pretends to be a saint, saying “no” to everything. I want to stay a little dirty. I want to smoke with the young people. I want to get totally messed up sometimes. But at the same time, through my spiritual practice, I understand that alcohol is a poison. And I know that weed can be a coping mechanism. It’s about being afraid of something inside ourselves that creates unpleasant feelings, so we want to detach from it.
I know exactly what you mean. I have this fantasy of being completely sober, but I’m such a nightlife person, like you. How do you even do that?
It’s a practice, a decision. It’s all mental. I did it in Korea. I only had one or two drinks a week while partying, and I really trained my mind there.
